Laura Stanford Foundation School, a small Christian-founded institution located in the impoverished Kawempe suburb of Kampala, Uganda, has long been a sanctuary of learning for children in one of the city’s most underprivileged neighbourhoods.
History and Christmas event
Despite its vital role in the community, the school has faced numerous challenges in recent years, ranging from leadership instability to financial constraints. However, a remarkable Christmas fundraising campaign organized by Friends & Bikers for Africa, using the Babbinmoto motorbike Christmas event, has ushered in a new era of hope for the school and its community.
Laura Stanford Foundation School, situated in a predominantly Islamic area, has struggled to attract many learners due to religious and cultural differences. In January 2023, the situation worsened when Moses Omara, the former Executive Director of SORD Uganda, was tragically murdered, leaving parents deeply concerned about their children’s safety. The uncertainty prompted many families to withdraw their children, causing the school’s population to plummet from over 300 to less than 150 learners.
To add on to the school’s troubles, the former head teacher launched a competing school in June 2023, taking with him 41 learners and several staff members. This exodus left the school in dire financial straits, struggling to pay rent, staff salaries, and essential bills. Feeding the children and maintaining the school premises became an uphill battle. Despite these setbacks, the school remained resilient, thanks to the unwavering support of donors and sponsors. Recognizing the urgent need for intervention, Friends & Bikers for Africa, through the Babbinmoto Christmas fundraising campaign, stepped in to revitalize the school and restore its dignity.
The Impact of the Renovations
With funds raised from the Babbinmoto event and by Friends & Bikers for Africa organisation, the school underwent significant renovations and repainting in January 2025. The renovations have transformed the school into a more inviting and conducive environment for learning, making it a beacon of hope for the Kawempe community.
The freshly painted walls, repaired infrastructure, and overall improved aesthetic appeal have reinvigorated both staff and students. The restoration has also rekindled confidence among parents, many of whom now view the school as a safe and attractive environment for their children’s education.
The school currently serves 167 learners and employs 22 teaching and support staff, who are motivated by the positive changes. While financial challenges persist, this act of kindness has given the school a renewed sense of purpose and stability.
A Model for Sustainable Development
The generosity extended to the Kawempe school is not an isolated act. Friends & Bikers for Africa, through several fundraiser activities, have equally supported the Amolatar school, another institution under SORD Uganda. Located on a two-acre piece of independent land, the Amolatar school has witnessed remarkable growth, with its population rising from 90 learners in 2022 to 267 learners by the end of 2024. The construction of a school kitchen, storeroom, office, and classroom has enhanced the learning environment, ensuring that children thrive academically and socially. The Amolatar school’s success serves as a shining example of how targeted interventions can transform entire communities. This progress has inspired the Kawempe school community to dream bigger, envisioning future projects that will not only benefit the school but also uplift the surrounding area.
Future Expectations and Community Development Initiatives
Local community harbours high hopes for further financial support and initiatives from organizations like Friends & Bikers for Africa. One of the most ambitious plans involves utilizing the two acres of land in Amolatar for a tree-planting project. This initiative aims to combat climate change by contributing to rainfall formation, reducing global warming, and ensuring a sustainable supply of firewood and timber for the school. The project also holds the potential to educate learners about environmental conservation and the importance of sustainability.
Another visionary project involves establishing vocational training programs for school dropouts in the community. Recognizing the socio-economic challenges that lead to high dropout rates, the school aims to offer practical skills in tailoring, carpentry, baking, building, hairdressing, and cosmetology.
These programs will empower young people, particularly girls, to achieve economic independence, thereby breaking the cycle of poverty in their families and the wider community.
Success Action
The success of the renovation and the hope that has been brought to the Kawempe and Amolatar schools is a testament to the power of community and the generosity of supporters from afar. Friends & Bikers for Africa, and their representatives have shown what can be achieved when people come together to support a worthy cause.
The management of Laura Stanford Foundation School extends its deepest gratitude to everyone who has contributed to its survival and growth. The school remains committed to providing quality education and fostering a holistic development of its learners.
As the school looks to the future, it invites more individuals and organizations to join its mission. The ongoing need for financial support is critical to sustain the school’s operations, launch community development projects, and ensure a brighter future for the children of Kawempe and Amolatar.
